2023 Toyota RAV4

The US-market 2023 Toyota RAV4 is a five-seat compact SUV offered with a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder, a 219-horsepower hybrid, and a 302-horsepower RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. Every Hybrid and every Prime is all-wheel drive.

Configurations, engines & drivetrain

US-market configuration specifications. MPG is the EPA combined city/highway estimate; horsepower is engine output except where marked system (Hybrid and Prime figures are net combined output). Towing is the manufacturer maximum tow rating for that configuration; confirm it against the specific vehicle before towing. EV range applies to the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid only.

Transmission & fuel economy

Gasoline RAV4s use an eight-speed automatic; the Hybrid and Prime use an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT). Horsepower shown for the Hybrid and Prime is net combined system output, not engine-only output. EPA combined fuel-economy estimates are 28 to 30 mpg for the gasoline grades and 37 to 40 mpg for the Hybrid; the RAV4 Prime is EPA-rated at 94 MPGe with a 42-mile electric driving range and 38 mpg combined in hybrid mode. Compare the estimate for the exact grade and drivetrain rather than treating every RAV4 as equivalent. Actual mileage varies with conditions and use.

Passenger & trunk practicality

The table keeps seating attached to each configuration. Check the actual vehicle and try your usual passengers and luggage before deciding whether it fits your needs.

Recalls

3 distinct model-year recall campaigns across the reviewed 2023 RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime lookups, deduplicated by NHTSA campaign number: an accessory 17-inch alloy-wheel tire-valve condition on certain vehicles, an instrument-panel software condition, and a Panoramic View Monitor rear-camera condition. This is not the number of open recalls on a specific vehicle. Zero matching results would not establish safety or reliability.

Check an individual vehicle with NHTSA.

Owner reports

229 distinct submitted reports match the reviewed 2023 RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime vehicle scope. Reports were deduplicated by NHTSA report number across the three lookups, which use separate NHTSA model names and share no report numbers, so the reconciled total is 157 plus 8 plus 64. This is not a count of confirmed defects, distinct incidents or affected vehicles. No recurring-problem themes are asserted. Submitted reports are not a failure rate.

Manufacturer service information / TSBs

Manufacturer communications exist for the 2023 RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime — well over one hundred for a single body style — but the applicability, duplicate-record and supersession review needed for a verified model-year count was not completed. The count is unavailable, not zero; this does not mean no service information exists. No communication themes are presented. A service bulletin is not a recall and does not establish that every vehicle has the described condition.

Before buying

Confirm the exact grade, powertrain and drivetrain of the vehicle you are considering — gasoline, Hybrid and Prime RAV4s differ in fuel type, mechanicals and tow rating, and front- and all-wheel-drive gasoline grades carry different EPA ratings. Run the vehicle identification number through NHTSA and Toyota for open recalls and confirm any applicable recall work was completed. Review the service history, and on a Hybrid or Prime check the hybrid system; on a Prime confirm the charging cable and charge port operate. Check the maximum tow rating for that exact configuration before towing. This is a model-year reference and does not report the condition or history of any individual vehicle.
